Removing blackheads is an important step in bringing acne under control. Acne is a common and annoying skin condition that adults and young people suffer from. It can cause low self-esteem and be very frustrating trying to control it. Understanding what acne and blackheads are, and the reason they form, can lead to knowing how to get rid of them.
It is a common misconception among many people that Acne is a condition that is brought about by uncleanliness. However, the real cause is a surplus of oil that builds up in the sebaceous glands just beneath the skin.
A blackhead in medical terms is known as an open comedo, and can look yellowish as well as black. In fact, it is when an open comedo appears in a clogged hair follicle, as they often do, that the hair gives it its black appearance. It depends on the severity as to whether or not removing blackheads will be necessary as in some instances they can disappear naturally.
Many times, they become severe or chronic, and then removing blackheads is necessary. There are different means of removing them and some of those are natural remedies.
Firstly, adopt a daily regime of washing the affected area in natural vegetable glycerin soap or a natural skin-cleansing agent from the health store. Every second day, you should use a gentle, natural facial scrub. Again, these can be bought OTC (over the counter) at most good health stores.
Heat and steam are useful when removing blackheads because they cause the pores of your skin to open up so debris can escape. For that reason, a good time to do your facial cleaning routine is after you have taken a warm shower and your pores are open. You can also give yourself a steam facial a couple of times a week by holding your face over a bowl of steaming water. Drape a towel over your head and the bowl to help direct the steam to your face. Be careful not to burn your delicate skin on the hot water or the bowl. If you have access to sauna, it can be very beneficial and help in removing blackheads.
You can also make a natural lotion to apply to your face using 2 portions of jojoba oil, to one of rose hip seed oil, to one of lavender oil. The jojoba and the rose hip combine to help in removing the blackheads and to minimize scarring, whilst the lavender kills of any infection and help to lessen any inflammation.
Do not squeeze blackheads even though you may be tempted to do so. Removing blackheads in this method is dangerous as it can lead to infection and cause scarring.
You can now also buy something called a comedo extractor or blackhead strip. This is rather like a hair-waxing strip. You simply apply it to the skin, leave it in place for ten minutes, and then pull it off taking the blackheads with it. Two problems. It may cause scarring, and it does nothing to cure the root cause, namely the excessive build up of sebaceous oil.
Try naturally removing blackheads first. These methods do show excellent results, and avoid or minimize the possibility of scarring. Find out more about these natural methods now and banish your Acne problems forever.
